What to do???

I am not getting ANYWHERE with early intervention! We went through the public school system and they would not accept him even with a diagnosis from a Pediatric Psychologist and I cannot get any of the Autism preschool centers to call me back. What on earth is a mom to do?? I am so worried that he is going to slip through the cracks during the summer. Does anyone have a home school program that they have supplemented with? I just don't want to miss this early time!

You can appeal the school district's decision by filling out a one page from. If you request it, they have to supply it to you.

At preschool age, most of the early intervention is done by the parents.

Speech Therapist
Occupational Therapist

If your child is testing too high at school, you'll probably have to continue these yourself.

Since you have a diagnosis, you should be able to organize an IEP for school but you'll need to think carefully about what you want because they're hard to change once they're in place.

Also - consider a tutor on weekends.

Random early intervention by itself isn't terribly useful. You need to work out exactly which weaknesses need to be pulled up; Speech? Reading? Mathematics? Listening Skills? Attention Span or perhaps just social skills.

Good luck.

Yes! I have several blogs I can send you that have FABULOUS homeschool curriculum. I have been doing homeschool activites with K and E for the last 2 months. I have really just focused on teaching K. He is the one going to Kindergarten next year so I really want to make sure he is prepared. He is the type of kid where if it is hard he just shuts down. I dont want him to do that. He is smart kid, but has trouble focusing. Honestly, I think a lot of that is simply being a boy! But, I really truly want him to be ready for Kindergarten. I want him to enjoy learning. I will tell you that last year we had K screened for the early childhood program. He qualifed for an IEP due to his speech issues. So he currently receives speech services at hs preschool twice a week. That will carry over into Kindergarten. As a former special ed teacher, i will say that a child entering into Kindergarten on an IEP for learning issues is prtty rare. Simply because some see it as setting them up for failure. But, I certainly understand not wanting them to slip through the cracks. Several of the homeschool blogs that I have been using actually have Preschool Packs that are created using themes. Including a BATMAN themed unit!! Jackpot!! The second week of homeschooling we used that and K was hooked on homeschooling! We call it "Learning Time" and I have really worked at making it fun for him. Lots of multisensory learning. My email is dolfinlvr101@yahoo.com Shoot me an email and I can send you the links to the blogs and websites I have been using and answer any questions you have.
PS Sorry for writing a book!!

So sorry to hear this! My little siblings all used ECI, and it was great...unfortunately I don't know enough about this to help you out. I hope you find an incredible program soon to help your sweet boy!
